September 2010 im Christian-Doppler-Hörsaal der Fakultät für Physik der Universität Wien Teil 8. Tim Langen (Technische Universität Wien): Quantum Physics Using Atom Chips Integration and miniaturization has proven to be key to the development of fundamental science into a robust technology - the microelectronic and information revolution being the most prominent examples. Our goal is to develop a similar approach for quantum physics. Central to our effort is the atom chip, a microfabricated device in which electric, magnetic and optical fields can be used to precisely confine, manipulate and interface various types of atomic and solid state quantum systems. This talk outlines recent examples for the versatility and the potential of these devices. In particular, experiments with low-dimensional quantum gases to study fundamental problems of many-body physics are presented, as well as prospects for hybrid systems to create quantum repeaters and quantum memories.
